Who is responsible for revising the ISO9001:2000 and making the new ISO9001:2008 ?

ISO9001 series of standards are periodically reviewed and revised.
1987 version to 1994 version - revised after 7 years.
1994 version to 2000 version - revised after 6 years.
2000 version to 2008 version - revised after 8 years.

ISO technical committee ISO/TC 176, Quality management and quality assurance is the specific ISO Committee responsible for the ISO 9000 family of standards.

ISO/TC176 is drafting several support documents explaining what the differences are between ISO 9001:2008 and the year 2000 version.

Once approved, these documents will be posted on the ISO Web site – probably in October 2008. Please check out www.iso.ch .

When will the ISO9001:2000 certification be valid until?

An important question in the mind of every ISO9001 practitioner is the validity of certifications to ISO 9001:2000. When will the certification of ISO9001:2000 be valid till?

ISO (International Standards Organisation) had decided that:
a) One (1) year after publication of ISO 9001:2008 all accredited certifications issued (new certifications or recertifications) shall be to ISO 9001:2008.
b) Twenty four (24) months after publication by ISO of ISO 9001:2008, any existing certification issued to ISO 9001:2000 shall not be valid.

So, the ISO9001:2000 certification shall be valid until...maximum...end of year 2010. This is based on the assumption that ISO9001:2008 standard will be published by end of year 2008.

Timeline of ISO9001:2008 Implementation

Let us look back at history....ISO9001:2000 was issued on 15 December 2000. Companies and organisations were given 3 years to convert from ISO9001:1994 and ISO9002:1994 to ISO9001:2000.

For the ISO9001:2008, the Joint IAF-ISO Community had agreed that:
1) Accredited certification to the ISO 9001:2008 shall not be granted until the publication of ISO 9001:2008 as an International Standard.
2) Certification of conformity to ISO 9001:2008 and/or national equivalents shall only be issued after official publication of ISO 9001:2008 (which should take place before the end of 2008) and after a routine surveillance or recertification audit against ISO 9001:2008.

I think the time allocated is too short. Practically, the implementation grace period for ISO9001:2008 should be 3 years...just like for ISO9001:2000.

What are the new requirements of ISO9001:2008 ?

The major concern among all ISO9001 practitioners is what are the new requirements of ISO9001:2008.

ISO 9001:2008 does not contain any new major requirements.

ISO TC176 Committee have recognized that ISO 9001:2008 introduces no new requirements of significiance.

The changes to ISO 9001:2008 are mainly clarifications to the existing requirements of ISO 9001:2000 based on eight years of experience of implementing the standard world wide with about one million certificates issued in 170 countries to date. The changes seen in ISO9001:2008 hence are minor.

So, ISO9001 practitioners need to only amend the Quality Manual....and may be some Procedures.

ISO9001:2008 also contains changes intended to improve consistency in line with ISO14001:2004.

ISO9001:2008 status - is it released?

ISO/FDIS 9001
Quality management systems -- Requirements

Answer:
ISO9001:2008 is not yet released. ISO9001:2008 is expected to be released by end of year 2008...targetted to be 31 October 2008.

Currently, ISO/FDIS 9001:2008 is available. However, this is not publicly issued and not available widely yet.

There is still possible minor changes and corrections from ISO/FDIS9001:2008 to ISO9001:2008.

I guess we will just have to wait patiently for the finalised version, i.e. ISO9001:2008 to be isuued.

What is ISO9001:2008

ISO9001:2008 is a standard for quality management system. ISO9001:2008 is expected to be issued and published on October 31, 2008 or latest by end of the year.

ISO9001:2008 is a revised version of ISO9001:2000 standard. ISO9001 series of standards are expected to be reviewed and revised every 5 to 8 years.

The first version was ISO9001:1987. This was later replaced by ISO9001:1994, after a span of 7 years. It was later replaced by the current ISO9001:2000, after a span of 6 years.

ISO9001:2008 specifies requirements for a quality management system where a company or organization needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product and/or services that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

ISO9001:2008 aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective implementation of the quality management system. ISO901:2008 also includes processes for continual improvement of the system. ISO9001:2000 also emphasises conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

All requirements of ISO 9001:2008 are generic and are intended to be applicable to all companies and organizations, regardless of type, size and product and/or services provided.

Where any requirement(s) of ISO 9001:2008 (expecially 7.3, 7.5.2, 7.5.4, 7.6) cannot be applied due to the nature of an organization and its product, this can be considered for exclusion.

Where exclusions are made, claims of conformity to ISO 9001:2008 are not acceptable unless these exclusions are limited to requirements within Clause 7 (expecially 7.3, 7.5.2, 7.5.4, 7.6), and such exclusions do not affect the organization's ability, or responsibility, to provide product and/or service that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
